Thermodynamics of Hurricanes Revisited

چکیده
Hurricanes and tropical storms are heat engines operating between warm oceans the cold upper troposphere. The purpose of this article is to examine existing theories for hurricanes storms, discuss their validity. It argued that contrary previous claims Carnot engines, these systems operate at efficiencies considerably below maximum thermodynamic efficiency. As such, validity current thermodynamics remains questionable, phenomenon continues be a geophysical enigma.

Network thermodynamics revisited.
Modeling provides a bridge between the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and the like) and the axiomatic sciences (mathematics and statistics). Inductively-derived descriptive models map observations of physical processes into mathematical descriptions that can be treated as axioms (e.g., the various laws of physics). A synthetic model combines descriptive models of several physica...
متن کاملFemale hurricanes are deadlier than male hurricanes.
Do people judge hurricane risks in the context of gender-based expectations? We use more than six decades of death rates from US hurricanes to show that feminine-named hurricanes cause significantly more deaths than do masculine-named hurricanes. Laboratory experiments indicate that this is because hurricane names lead to gender-based expectations about severity and this, in turn, guides respon...
متن کاملThe Theory of Hurricanes
The hurricane remains one of the outstanding enigmas of fluid dynamics. This is so, in part, because the phenomenon is comparatively difficult to observe and because no laboratory analogue has been discovered. To this it must be added that hurricanes have received surprisingly little attention from the theoretically inclined fluid dynamicist, perhaps owing to an understandable tendency to avoid...
متن کاملA review of quantum thermodynamics
In this article, we present a brief and elementary review of quantum thermodynamics and its achievements and challenges. This review includes an introduction to some fundamental concepts such as internal energy, heat, work, entropy, entropy production, thermal equilibrium, second law of quantum thermodynamics, relation between thermodynamics and information theory, as well as a discussion of ho...
متن کاملQUICKSELECT Revisited
We give an overview of the running time analysis of the random divide-and-conquer algorithm FIND or QUICKSELECT. The results concern moments, distribution of FIND’s running time, the limiting distribution, a stochastic bound and the key: a stochastic fixed point equation.
